August 15th, 2015 Portland, ME Margie and Matt got engaged in an Oregon vineyard on Halloween 2014. There was nothing spooky about their wedding at The Portland Company, on the waterfront. The ceremony and reception were held in separate rooms in the building. “It’s a raw industrial space,” says Margie. “We fell in love with it.” A former event planner, Margie planned the wedding herself. The venue doesn’t have furniture so she rented tables, chairs and place settings from One Stop Party Shop in Portland; she arranged a small lounge seating area, with chairs, a couch and vintage items from…

Celeste Ladd & Gordon Ober

September 19th, 2015 York, ME Celeste and Gordon’s wedding was a true family affair. They both come from large families and wanted to accommodate as many people as possible at their wedding; they also wanted to get married in Maine. “We looked at venues up and down the coast and decided on my parents’ home for sentimental reasons,” says Celeste. “It was a nice opportunity to work with them on what turned out to be the perfect wedding.” Stacking wood, digging up rocks, staining an outdoor deck: not the romantic details many brides think of when planning a wedding, but…

September 19th, 2015 Portsmouth, NH Ashleigh and Evan kept one thought in mind as they planned their wedding: this is about us, and we’re going to do what we want to do. They stayed true to themselves as they said their vows on the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, a historic landmark in a city that means so much to them. The ceremony was private with just the officiant (who was Ashleigh’s uncle), the best man and the maid of honor—exactly how they wanted it, although they did allow their waiting family and friends to view the nuptials live with the…

September 20th, 2014 New Castle, NH Erika and Michael’s engagement started with a work of art and culminated with a sunny wedding by the ocean. In 2013, Michael proposed to Erika by commissioning an original artwork, called a sound form, that depicted his voice saying “Erika, will you marry me?” A year later, they were married on a summery day at Fort Constitution, a Coast Guard station on Portsmouth Harbor in New Castle, NH. Erika arrived at the ceremony with her bridesmaids in a vintage Volkswagon van. She was initially nervous. “When I walked down the aisle with my dad…

Bohemian Wedding Inspiration

Nancy Gorman, owner of Makeup by Nancy A Bohemian Chic style wedding has become a popular trend and lately and, we, a group of New England wedding professionals collaborated together and created a styled shoot that provided a different twist on it then the normal neutrals, greens and cream colors. We wanted to keep with the eclectic mix of hippie {peace & love}, nomad and gypsy lifestyle with an artistic flair. We chose to use deep purple, burgundy and white as the primary colors with added splashes of vibrant pinks, oranges and greens for an eye-catching pop of color. To…

Karen O’Shaughnessy & Charlie Traver

August 29, 2015 Dover, NH Karen and Charlie dated for eight years before he proposed the day after Christmas. A pilot, Charlie got home at 2 a.m. Karen waited up for him. When Charlie insisted that she open a few of her gifts, Karen reluctantly agreed. One of them was a ring. “I saw it and thought ‘oh no, here I am wearing my reindeer pajamas and he’s proposing’!” she says. The couple wanted a relaxed wedding, “nothing typical,” Karen says. She discovered Three Rivers Farm, a large estate in Dover, while researching vacation homes. The property’s beautiful wooded setting,…

Pop of Color

By Nancy Gorman, owner of Makeup by Nancy Once upon a time there used to be a “wedding season” such as the freshness of the June Bride or the vibrancy of the autumn leaves. I’m finding now there is no real wedding season now. Weddings are 12 months a year. Which is certainly good for the wedding professionals for sure! Lately there have been a barrage of winter weddings, photo’s done wearing a faux fur shawl or shrug outside with the winter snow falling on you or indoors next to a roaring fireplace. A small group of New England wedding…

July 17-18th, 2015 Bethlehem, NH Jason and Katelyn wanted their wedding celebration to reflect their love of the outdoors and their individuality. The couple, who’ve known each other for 10 years, met through Jason’s brother, Bryan. They got engaged in April 2014, as Katelyn was preparing to take helicopter flying lessons. Jason planned to propose during a lesson but windy weather forced him to make alternative plans. Instead, he proposed after the couple took in a show in Boston. “Much less terrifying than proposing on a helicopter!” says Katelyn. The couple had their ceremony and reception at the Rocks Estate,…

Whitney Strout & Mathew Thornton

September 27th, 2014 Bath, ME Even before she was engaged, Whitney loved weddings. “I help my friends with all of theirs,” says the culinary school graduate. So when she and Mathew got engaged in 2013, she happily went into wedding overload. Both Maine natives, the couple met at the University of Maine; they wanted a Maine-themed wedding with a nautical focus. The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath provided the perfect backdrop for waterside nuptials; their reception was held under a tent near the museum’s shipyard. Whitney and Mathew worked diligently to make sure the wedding reflected the best of Maine,…
