Ali Englehardt and Rich Walters

September 19th, 2015 Rye, NH Seaside weddings aren’t unique in New England. But a wedding with a casual surf vibe… not your everyday occasion. Ali, who’s from New York, and Rich, who’s from Durban, South Africa, share a love for surfing. The couple runs Umzumbe Surf House & Surf Camp, a South African surfing camp and bed and breakfast; they also have close tied to the Rye, NH, surfing community. Ali knew she wanted to get married in NH. “We have an amazing group of friends here and it was a great destination for our South African guests,” she says.…

Renee Bouchard and Sam Habashy

August 7th, 2016 Lowell, MA As a wedding industry professional, Renee has been involved in thousands of weddings (she’s assistant manager of Madeleine’s Daughter, a bridal salon in Portsmouth, NH). So when she became engaged to Sam in 2016, she knew what she wanted: a surprise wedding. “I see hundreds and hundreds of weddings,” says Renee. “It’s hard to come up with something truly memorable. I wanted something unique. Fortunately, Sam was onboard with having a surprise wedding. Guests were invited to join the couple at a so-called engagement party at Nesmith House in Lowell; the couple only hinted that…

November 7th, 2015 Portland, ME Kate jokes that it was Mitch’s beard that initially attracted her to his Match.com profile. Fortunately, he was also smart, funny, and worth going out with, she says, nothing “He was the right person to be around.” Kate grew up near the water in Portsmouth, NH, and she and Mitch both wanted to be married in a Seacoast community. They were especially entranced by the rough wooden beams and unfinished beauty of the Portland Company, an event space in a former warehouse in Portland’s Old Port. “It felt like a cathedral,” says Kate. Working with…

Elizabeth, a pianist, is executive director of the DC Youth Orchestra Program in Washington, DC; music is an integral part of the couple’s lives. Rather than extensive readings during their ceremony, the couple planned three musical pieces, performed by friends and set against a picture-perfect view of Rockport Harbor. August 27th, 2016 Southport, ME   Claire and Eric met playing recreational ultimate frisbee in Washington, DC. Ironically, says Claire, when she told the league organizer that she wasn’t good at the sport, he told her, “It’s all about heart, not skills.” And that’s what piqued Eric’s interest in her when he met Claire after their first game together. The couple got engaged on a bluff overlooking Half Moon Bay in California, near where Eric grew up. Claire knew immediately that their wedding ceremony would be in Maine. Her family, all from Texas, spent many happy summers in Tenants Harbor;…

Laura Gerseny and John Fraser

October 17th, 2015 Hopkinton, NH They say home is where the heart is, so for Laura and John, who were living and teaching in Albuquerque, NM, that meant having their wedding in New Hampshire near her hometown of Hopkinton. “Dimond Hill Farm is where my family has always bought produce.” says Laura. “I knew that was the place for us.” What was planned as the quintessential outdoor ceremony overlooking the White Mountains and fall foliage ended up something of a washout. “I think it was right after Dad lifted my veil that the hail started, followed by pouring rain, so…

The rustic Maine camp, where Whitney was a camper and later a counselor, was the perfect site for a DIY wedding. The couple, both screenwriters in Los Angeles, hosted multiple craft nights…

Alyssa Dethlefs and Erin Ryan

June 11th, 2016 Danvers, MA Aly and Erin’s lush garden wedding was nearly a washout. Aly was Erin’s resident assistant at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire when they started dating. “I was a sophomore and he was a freshman,” she says. “It was pretty scandalous!” The couple dated for five years and then took a trip to Ireland, where Aly was convinced Erin would propose. He did- but waited until the last night they were in town. “I was thinking how could he pass up Ireland as a place to propose, then he got down on one knee while…
