Wood Island, Maine
A mutual love of family and the ocean inspired Ashleigh and Trevor’s romantic elopement at Wood Island Life Saving Station off the coast of Maine.
Friends at a surf shop suggested Ashleigh and Trevor get their daughters together for a playdate. Although Ashleigh initially ignored Trevor’s advances, they eventually went out (without the kids). After dating for almost two years, Trevor popped the question.
Fascinated with the 100-year-old Wood Island Life Saving Station off Kittery Point, they inquired about having a small wedding there and, after receiving an enthusiastic “yes,” discovered they would be the first couple ever married there. Wood Island Life Saving Station Association president Sam Reid ferried the couple and their immediate families out to the island for the ceremony. “There’s no place to dock there,” says Ashleigh. “Sam’s wearing a blazer and khakis and dress shoes but he jumps out of the boat in water up to his waist to pull us into shore. He carried me out of the boat and handed me to Trevor!”
After a small ceremony attended by just their parents and daughters, and officiated by the friend who introduced them, the couple returned to the mainland for cocktails at Wiggly Bridge Distillery in York, then on to dinner and dancing in Kennebunkport. “Getting married on Wood Island was so special,” says Ashleigh. “The sound of the ocean was the best sound we could have.”
