Margie and Matt got engaged in an Oregon vineyard on Halloween 2014. There was nothing spooky about their wedding at The Portland Company, on the waterfront. The ceremony and reception were held in separate rooms in the building. “It’s a raw industrial space,” says Margie. “We fell in love with it.”
A former event planner, Margie planned the wedding herself. The venue doesn’t have furniture so she rented tables, chairs and place settings from One Stop Party Shop in Portland; she arranged a small lounge seating area, with chairs, a couch and vintage items from The Family Affair of Maine in New Gloucester and even organized a party a few days before the wedding for friends to help create wedding signage. Fun street food including sliders, fish tacos and fresh salads was prepared onsite by Bread and Butter Catering, who also provided the raspberry lemon curd wedding cake and other small cakes for the dessert table. The weather for the wedding day was sweltering but, just as the indoor ceremony began, it started to rain. Fortunately, Leah Arsenault, the wedding photographer, kept an eye on the weather and grabbed the couple for a quick outdoor shot, just as a rainbow broke through the clouds behind them. “Portland has so many beautiful places to get married,” says Margie. “We were so lucky to be where we were.”
