How to Create a Cozy Home for You & Yours

By Amy Dutton, owner of amy dutton Home

When you walk into your home, do you think, “Ah, Home Sweet Home”? You should!

When you are creating a new home, especially with a new spouse – this is one of the most important things to do. Why? Because it is a personal, very personal, space!

As you step off into the new world of establishing a home with a loved one, I encourage you to do this very intentionally. Your relationship is private and intimate just between the two of you and the home that you create is the space that you will spend the most alone time together.  So, make this space exactly what the TWO of you want and need.

Here are some ideas of how to pull that off:

  • This is a combination of two people’s taste and history – be respectful!
  • The location or size should not matter; for your first home we are discussing how you use and experience not just the interior but also the outside space.
  • Each of you should find a way to express the things that you love and hate about a design. One suggestion is to spend some time on Pinterest or Houzz.com together (men usually are not fans of this exercise but he will do it with a woman that he loves if it means spending time with her.)
Note: it is very important to remember that these are magazines and images created for the public – they are not necessarily reality and meant to be lived in. These resources are for inspiration only!
  • Once you have created an idea of what you want or simply cannot come to an agreement – it’s time to call or stop by amy dutton Home Shop.

This year we are excited to announce our online store with focus on gift registry. Why? Because we believe that the modern couple wants something more unique and special than the typical wedding registry. You will and should still do this – our focus is getting you something that speaks to the both of you as you create your own original & true design aesthetic.

When we first meet you will have several options before you and as designers, it is our job to guide you in the direction to meet your individual needs.

Here’s how it works:

OPTION 1: DESIGN A ROOM ~ We can design a room with you customized to your vision & dreams.

OPTION 2: PLAN YOUR GIFTS ~ You can select home good products from our shop & vendors. From sofas to lighting to rugs and more.

OPTION 3: HIRE A DESIGNER ~ Do you need a home consultation or an addition / renovation? Registering for these services is a great way to improve your home with a professional designer.

OPTION 4: CREATE YOUR THEME ~ The amy dutton Fabric & Paper line is original and not sold anywhere but amy dutton Home Shop. Your design will be unique to your own wedding and/or home.

OPTION 5: HOST YOUR SHOWER ~ Looking for a shower venue? We will host the shower here and you will be able to show off your registry.

We will be at the Seacoast Bridal Show at UNH on January 31st with show specials. Or, you can simply come into the shop and spend some time looking around. You can also always make an appointment. We are here to help you create a home together that is unique & special for just the two of you!

Design has always inspired Amy. From a young age in Berkeley, CA, through college at DePauw University in Indiana, and into her initial professional career at a world renowned Chicago architectural and interior design firm, designing and the joy it brings her clients has been her passion.
After finishing her second degree at Suffolk University, New England School of Design and being desirous of having an even larger impact for her clients’ projects, in 1998 she opened the doors of her own company.
While designing she loves to imagine her clients at their new kitchen sink, looking out the window to the recently designed and installed landscape and then turning around to view the beauty of their interiors. She always sees a smile on their face.
Because she believes that her my clients deserve a vision that encompasses the entire project, she has worked hard to develop a full-service design firm – architecture, interiors, landscapes and shop. Together with her staff, she enjoys designing the entire project from the inside to the outside.
